1-3/4 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup coarsely chopped walnuts or pecans
2/3 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/3 cup shortening
2 eggs, unbeaten
1 cup mashed ripe bananas (2 or 3)

Sift together first 4 ingredients; add nuts and set aside. In mixing bowl, thoroughly cream sugar and shortening. Add eggs and beat well. Stir in mashed bananas, then flour-nut mixture, beating just until smooth. Pour into greased 9 x 5 x 3-inch loaf pan. Bake at 350F. for about 1 hour, or until done when tested. Turn out on rack to cool.
