1 cup granulated sugar
2 eggs, separated
2 cups milk
2 envelopes unflavored gelatin
1/3 cup cold water
1 pint whipping cream, whipped
1 large angel food cake
Walnuts and maraschino cherries for topping

Combine sugar, egg yolks and milk. Cook over low heat until slightly thickened. Soften gelatin in cold water. Stir into custard mixture that has cooled slightly. Continue cooling and when mixture is slightly thickened fold in stiffly beaten egg whites and the whipped cream.
Break angel food cake into pieces. Place layer of broken pieces in 13 x 9 x 2-inch pan. Pour half the custard mixture over layer. Then add remaining cake pieces. Cover with remaining custard. Sprinkle broken wlanut meats and maraschino cherries over top.
Chill several hours or overnight. Pineapple can be add to custard, if desired.
