Synth Era

Afterlife

The beginning sounds like a bad 80's tune, but the hardcore beat kicks in pretty quick. Rebirth came in handy with this song. It went through many revisions, but I like the way it came out. It's... epic or something. The drum loop keeps it from getting boring, but it never gets too 'busy'. It took me almost 4 months to write this song.

Boiling Hot

This barely qualifies as a completed song. I had planned to do more with it, but could never get in the mood to do more. Then I accidentally deleted the directory with the .wav files for this song, and decided it was probably better that they were gone. I was trying to write old-school german hardtrance. It turned out.. okay.

Cataclysm

This is the first song I completed with my Roland MC-909 Sampler/Groovebox. I composed this entire piece on the groovebox, not using any computer software except to record and encode the mp3. I'm very pleased with the results. The MC-909 can do some pretty neat stuff all by itself, not to mention the neat stuff I can do when I use it in conjunction with my other equipment.

Cyberpunk Symphony

I totally dig this song. I don't know why. It's chaotic, but it's got an industrial sound to it, and a typical thump-crash, thump-crash techno beat. I experimented with my synth a lot to get the sounds in this song, and I guess that's why I like it so much -- I didn't know exactly where this song was going when I started it. I was pissed off, wrote it in one night (a long night), and I'm pretty pleased at how it turned out. It conveys my emotions well.

Eye of the Beholder

Very high-energy song, but very melodic, with lots of different intertwining segments. Right after I started writing this, I had the tune permanently stuck in my head for a few weeks. But trust me, that was a good thing.

Falling Upward

This one's got a little bit of swing. I used a nice combination of midi sounds and synth stuff for a jazzy feel. When I wrote this, I was picturing someone starting at the bottom of a lake or pond or something, and floating up towards the surface, with fish and lobsters swimming by and dancing. I know, it sounds corny. Believe me, the song is actually pretty good.

Hello Dial Tone

I was going for a song with some non-electronic sounds, and something of a shuffle beat. It worked, I guess. The song kind of took on a life of it's own as I wrote it, but I think that's a good thing, because the beginning of the song is kind of lame, and it gets better as it goes along.

In the Rain

This was one of the first songs I produced with my synth that I consider of professional quality. It definately has it's flaws, but it's still one of my favorites. The piano riff is beautiful... there was originally a very harsh sounding synth sound in it's place, and I'll forever be glad that I took it out and put the piano in. I just wish it were longer... maybe I'll do an extended mix one of these days.

Logical Operator

The closest I can get to defining the genre of this song is by comparing it to early Daft Punk tracks, like something off their first album, Homework. It's got a plodding, distinctive beat, but you could probably dance to it if you were so inclined. Of course, it has trance influences and structure that is typical to a lot of the songs I write.

The Possibilities

I can't quite figure it out. I'm almost never in a good mood, yet I keep writing these happy sounding songs. Actually, this one was written to convey my feelings for a girl, but... well, that's ancient history. It's a good song, though.

Roses of Shadow

There are two factors that normally influence the music I write: things that are going on in my life, and the kind of music I listen to regularly during the time period I write the song. This one demonstrates both well. There's a group called Deep Dish that heavily influenced the sound of this song, and it also musically describes the relationship I have with some very important people in my life.

Venom

This song has a weird feel to it that I can't quite explain. I love the way this song moves along -- it's like a bunch of primitive jungle-dwelling people building into a frenzy in some sort of religious ritual. It has a strange sound that I've recently noticed sounds something like a dying telephone... but it works as a gap filler and sounds neat.

Virtual Anxiety

Man, I love toms. They're the greatest percussion instrument ever. I guess I would classify this one as progressive trance, but I'm bad at classifying my stuff. Nobody really cares anyway. Just download it.

When the Night Falls

I found myself humming this song at school one day before it was ever written. I dug out a notebook and wrote down the lyrics, and concentrated on the tune until I could get home and record it. But there was one slight problem -- I can't sing. A solution presented itself -- the use of a vocoder. So yes, I sing in this song, but my voice is altered until it's almost completely unrecognizable.

Wind is to Fire

A very "danceable" song. I'm rather proud of the percussion in this one... I didn't rip off anyone's drum loops, it's all me, baby. It's got a really cool baseline thingy going on, too. Download and enjoy!
