Q: Who is Monkeyhole Music?
A: Monkeyhole Music consists of one person. That would be me. My long-time online name is Xzazarill, and my real name is Peter Schmeer. I write all the music, own the domain, write the HTML, and do pretty much everything else around here.
Q: How long have you been writing music?
A: A long time. I took piano lessons for about 11 or 12 years, and I've been 'creating' as long as I can remember. For a long time, I was part of an online Tracker group called TurnStyle. That eventually fell apart because I'm horrible at meeting deadlines, and we were disorganized for the most part. All of the music on this site was written after 1998 or so.
Q: What equipment do you use to write your music?
A: I started out with some crappy software that came with my Thunder Media SoundBlaster compatable soundcard. That was back in the early 90's, and I don't even know if any copies of the music I wrote with that software still exists. I then moved on to FastTracker II, which I ran on a pentium133 with 64 megs of RAM, and I swiped samples from all over the internet. I now use a variety of software, mostly CubaseVST and Rebirth, which I run on my PC (1.6GHz P4, 512 MB RAM, SBLive soundcard). The only real 'equipment' I use is my Korg MS2000 synth.
Q: Who were you musical influences?
A: That's a stupid question. I listen to all kinds of music -- mostly techno, but a lot of rock, jazz, classical, oldies... you name it, I've heard it. Most of my CDs are Various Artist techno compliations. I listen to a lot of Trance. I'm also a big fan of Japanese dance DJs. If you get a chance, pick up a Fantastic Plastic Machine album. Nine Inch Nails is an old favorite, and Daft Punk often finds it's way into my portable CD player.
Q: Your music sucks! Why don't you learn to play the guitar like a normal person?
A: Hey. My music is free. If you don't like it, don't download it. Don't make me find out where you live and beat you senseless.
Q: Why can't I stream your MP3s from your site?
A: Because that takes a lot of bandwidth. I don't have a lot of bandwidth. I used to have some of my music up on Mp3.com, but they turned STUPID. Don't go there.
